Coulter and Lord Asriel, and in many ways they become the lead characters of the story- certainly their arcs are the most interesting in the play (and were in the books).

As the play is unlike anything we have ever done before, I decided to try something different at Auditions. Michael Legge’s Will was a more different interpretation to what I was expecting though, more of a miseryguts which made his own vulnerability a bit more touching. His Dark Materials is a trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman consisting of Northern Lights (1995; published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000). For Lyra and Will, its two central characters, it’s a coming of age and a transforming spiritual experience. They encounter fantastical creatures in parallel worlds-rebellious angels, soul-eating spectres, child-catching Gobblers and the armoured bears and witch-clans of the Archtic. The play was since then played many times in the UK, involving professionnal or amateurs and youth cast and crews. Travel between the worlds with Lyra and Will in this epic adaptation of Philip Pullman's famous trilogy: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. For older readers: the Sally Lockhart quartet: The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and The Tin Princess; The White Mercedes; and The Broken Bridge. Therefore we settled upon my native flat Yorkshire, which throws a challenge to the citizens and especially the Mayor of Trollesund as to which accent they can adopt.

The Golden Compass was my favorite book when I was 9 years old and I grew up to be a playwright, so I found it very rewarding to read and consider Nicholas Wright’s stage adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy trilogy. Some of the music in this play has already been remixed or processed by me, and in some places a small 'sample' of a piece has been looped, processed and generally changed a bit to suit our needs. The thrust of the story is to show Lyra and Will reversing the fall of man, embracing knowledge and experience and defeating submissive obedience to a deity.Fame (also UK tour), Tick Tick Boom, The Last Five Years, A Spoonful of Stiles and Drewe, Christmas in New York and The Great British Musical in Concert in the West End; Cinderella at the Lyric Hammersmith; Liver Birds Flying Home for Seabright; January the Musical at the Zedel; The Green Fairy at the Union; Pure Imagination and Tempting Fate at the St James; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Mrs Gucci, and Little By Little at the Arts; Shock Treatment at the King’s Head; Thérèse Raquin at the Finborough / Park; Ordinary Days at the Finborough /Trafalgar Studios; The Opinion Makers at Derby Playhouse; Another Way at the Cockpit; Lift at the Soho; Sister Act on UK tour; The Hired Man at Leicester Curve; Well Behaved Women and The Women’s Inspiration Awards at Cadogan Hall; Euro Pride and Night of 1000 Voices at the Royal Albert Hall; Charlotte’s Web at Polka; Let Him Have Justice at the Cochrane; and Just So and Out of This World at Chichester Festival.

During the childhood of its associated human, a dæmon can change its animal shape at will, but with the onset of adolescence it settles into a fixed, final animal form. Each crowd throws up its own challenges, but the essence of successful crowd activity is to apply central character rules to each and every minor character. For a large number of people, it will be their first contact with the production, so it needs to be exciting and attractive enough to draw them in and make them want to see the show. The success of the show brings a second run, with a new cast and some amendments of the script, from December 2004 to April 2, 2005. The single most heartening aspect of rehearsals was the fantastic atmosphere that existed whenever the cast was gathered together. He also co-judged the prestigious Christopher Tower Poetry Prize (awarded by Oxford University) in 2005 with Gillian Clarke. Their great quest demands a savage struggle against the most dangerous of enemies and a journey through worlds they have barely dreamt of.

And all this technical cleverness sets off a fine central performance by Elaine Symons as the wilful Lyra, a child who turns out to have the fate of entire universes on her shoulders. This becomes even more apparent on stage, where a witch says of the church that "as long as it's been on this earth, it's suppressed and persecuted everything good about human nature". Nathan Chapman led a movement section focusing on Bears and Angels; Jacquie Penrose led a section on multi-role characterisations and Paul and Gerry from SCAT Theatre Company headed up some introductory work on working with puppets. All of the power and bite of the novels with none of the watered-down pandering to American Christians that ruined the movie. As it turns out, Nicholas Hytner's production of His Dark Materials, now revived after a sell-out run earlier this year, solves these seeming problems triumphantly, catching a genuine sense of the magical. Pullman, also set in the world of His Dark Materials, will be published as a major work in three parts, with the first part to arrive in October 2017.
