About this deal

Baffle looks like someone has tried to make a Rubik's Cube out of Smarties and a camera lens, but this is one addictive game! In this slot, it had to shave off five minutes for a newscast anchored by Edwin Newman before the top of the hour. Further, Cullen was at the time based in New York City, while PDQ was taped in Hollywood; Cullen did not relocate to California until 1978.

The game was played in two halves with three rounds each (later two) and the times set in each round were added together. Thankfully you just remove one of the black lids in the ends and unscrew a small screw, and all tiles can be removed. The contestant was shown only three letters for each word (for example, BTR for "betray"), and had only five seconds allotted for each word. when you have completed it try it again but try to beat your previous time,so each time you get it done quicker.

The contestant won a prize based on how many correct answers were given, with the prize for eight always being a new car. Also since celebrities couldn't play the bonus game, the winning team drew a name of an audience member on a card out of a drum.

The process would be repeated for the other team, using the same answer; the player in the other team's booth could not hear the show's audio when the first team was playing. In both versions, the contestant had 30 seconds to guess words based on three-letter clues given by Enberg, such as "GDN" for "garden". MGM Television, as a successor-in-interest to Filmways (which purchased the Heatter-Quigley library in the late-1960s), owns the rights to the show and any future revivals. The format was altered again later in 1973, this time with all the players being celebrities, with a title change to All-Star Baffle. But NBC daytime programming head Lin Bolen decided to use that slot to end the ten-year-old Jeopardy! The team with the lowest total elapsed time won the game, and the "civilian" contestant went on to the bonus round.

When signaled by Enberg, that player would take three letters from the answer and place them on a board behind him or her where the partner in the booth could see them. Both shows' objective was for contestant/celebrity teams to guess a given word or phrase in the shortest amount of time with the fewest letters given as possible. To enable personalized advertising (like interest-based ads), we may share your data with our marketing and advertising partners using cookies and other technologies.
