About this deal

Beauty and the Beast retellings will never go out of style, and BEND HER is definitely in my list of favorites. The book does end on a cliffhanger and book 2 does not come out until May 2023, so there is a bit of a wait.

And so, when a group of soldiers brought a bound and drugged woman to my doorstep, to bribe me to fight in their war, and pulled the bag off of her head and I saw her there—the woman from the vision at my Ascension, and who has haunted my dreams ever since—I knew it was the beginning of my end. Bend Her” is a spicy, dark and tantalizing Beauty and the Beast retell that pulled me in from the start and is a delicious dark retelling treat. This story weaves elements of the original tale within an entirely new plot, adding a dark romance dynamic between the protagonists that is sure to appeal to fans of spicy books. We are discovering a new world with her as she learns more about herself, her limits and boundaries, and what she truly wants in life.

Not that one or the other can't voice both characters but, in this case, it really helped me to image the story play out in my head. I read this because it was in a BookTok clip for “books where villains gets the girl,” but I should have realized at the time it had only had 500 reviews. And so, when a group of soldiers brought a bound and drugged woman to my doorstep, to bribe me to fight in their war, and pulled the bag off of her head and I saw her there-the woman from the vision at my Ascension, and who has haunted my dreams ever since-I knew it was the beginning of my end. It felt like the author struggled to give the story substance with two povs, and it might have been more beneficial to focus on just one pov.

Some quotes from the book and what it made me think: (I'll mark as possible spoilers but out of context I personally don't think they say much. There's so much building going into everything that the reader becomes invested, which shows the skill of the author.

this situation brings on tropes such as forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and there are dom/sub kinks. There is a lot of world building and working on what becomes their relationship/friendship/situationship through the story. The story is told from both their perspectives, so that you get one perspective from Lisane of her trying to learn magic, and second from Rhaim when he fights with other magicians the deadly enemy.I’m not normally a slow burn reader, but this book has me in a chokehold and I cannot wait for the second book, Break Her, to be released.

Note: The women are living like this because it prevents mages from teleporting in and kidnapping them. star rating are: character motives felt weak and inconsistent, world building could be stronger and filled out more, and most of the smut came off more as abuse. In Bend Her, they keep referencing previous events but their opinion about the event changes throughout the book. Bend Her is a darker take on the classic Beauty and the Beast story, with a lot more spice and monsters than the original! As such, this bad guy reputation feels unfounded and he comes off more like a caring parental figure that gets angry sometimes… and justifies abuse as “training”. Cassie’s storytelling is bursting with vivid imagery, dynamic characters, and pulse-pounding plot twists. Their fates collide when Lisane is brought to Rhaim's doorstep, gifted to him by her father in exchange for his efforts in the ongoing war towards the Deathless.
