About this deal

Somebody Feed Phil the Book is the best thing since sliced bread . . . baked on the outskirts of Porto.” My favorite part of the book was how each recipe is by a local chef, explaining their dish and how much this particular dish and its ingredients relates to their culture, their country and their identity. The publisher actually only shared a sample (I believe the first third-ish of the book), but it was pretty easy to extrapolate from what I read. After a breezy introduction about Phil’s inspiration for the show, the book dedicates a chapter for each episode of the show so far. Read an excerpt below, and don't miss Dr. Jon LaPook's interview with Phil Rosenthal and Ray Romano on "CBS Sunday Morning" May 8!

We spoke with Rosenthal about the book, asked him to reveal his favorite food destinations (and his favorite foodie city), and talk about how he feels about fast food. He also shared the most requested recipe from the book to get you started on your culinary journey. The recipe in question, Braciola all’Arturo, comes courtesy of Da’Atutro’s Ernesto Ballarin, who was covered in season two’s “Venice” episode. In the episode, Rosenthal referred to it as “the world’s best pork chop” and considering it’s a fried pork cutlet, we’re inclined to believe him. Place the wrapped Brisket in the cooler for at least 1 hour. I've let it sit up to 5 hours and it was still excellent. This book belongs on every foodie's shelf. Well-traveled folk will identify with his impressions of people, cities, and food around the world, which are bound to spark your own memories. If you haven't traveled yet, don't feel left out - YOU are Phil's target audience. He wants you to be happy, be fed, and have adventures similar to his. If for some reason you can't travel, you can still roam the earth vicariously through Phil's storytelling.

PART II — The Recipe: Braciola all’Arturo

Near the end of each episode during the first two seasons, Rosenthal makes a video call to his parents, Max and Helen, relating to them his culinary discoveries. [9] After Helen's death in 2019, Max continued to appear in the segment for the next two seasons until his death in 2021. In the fifth season, Rosenthal would call a different guest each episode, which included his son Ben, Everybody Loves Raymond stars Ray Romano and Brad Garrett, Gilbert Gottfried, Judy Gold, and Paul Reiser, to continue the tradition. [4] Viewers have enjoyed the segment. [9] [4] Right. Right. I know that one of your mottos is “food is the great connector.” Obviously, you’ve proven that in the show.

Phil Rosenthal has an insatiable hunger for life! Across the 33 episodes of his excellent Netflix travel show, Somebody Feed Phil, the Emmy-nominated actor, writer, and director has explored five continents and 38 cities around the world. He doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Before you read this book, you need to watch the tv series. It’s not that you won’t enjoy or understand the book if you haven’t seen the series. It’s that the series is so utterly charming and delightful that I want everyone to see it.Phil's two main reasons for loving this destination? Lobster and family. He feasts on butter-drenched lobster rolls before visiting his cousins' farm. Amazing people, the locals of the countries and states he and his crew visit, these all influence the incredible dishes of their particular country/state. Phil soaks up the Southern scenery — and plenty of barbecue sauce — as he munches on ribs, fried lobster, hot tamales, alligator and a slab of steak. This Keto friendly dish will leave you wanting more when you’re finished. There are relatively no carbs with langostino and mussels so the majority of the carbs are coming from the Spaghetti Squash. Your traditional Spaghetti sauce has been substituted with Diced and Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Green Chiles which isn’t as saucy but equally as tasty! This is another super simple dish to make thanks in large part to our friend, Joe. The City of Brotherly Love opens its arms to Phil as he digs into iconic sandwiches, breaks bread with pal Patton Oswalt and samples new Philly classics.

With the same saucepan, add the remaining garlic and spinach and cook until the spinach softens. Transfer to a serving dish when finished. Now maybe Covid is over, I go to the restaurant. You meet the owner. Now you’ve fallen in love with it, and then the next thing you know, you’re in Machu Picchu. That’s how it works. That’s from looking at the menu on your phone. That’s all I’m asking of people. Try something, try it. Just try it. Because what’s the worst that can happen? We’re not children. The worst that can happen is I didn’t care for it. So you don’t have it again. But at least you tried it. And the journey, just like everything else in life, the journey is its own reward. Netflix The warmest of welcomes greets Phil in Morocco, where he savors lamb, gets a pop quiz on spices and commits a couscous faux pas over a family dinner. Rosenthal lives in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Monica Horan (who played Amy on “Everybody Loves Raymond”), and their two children. A particularly beloved show involved Helen and Max. “That scene at [their New York City apartment] is the only time we set something up on the show almost like a prank,” writes Rosenthal. “It could have gone badly, but look at how great my parents went with it. While we set up, Daniel Boulud (not only one of the greatest French chefs, but one of the greatest chefs of any kind in the world) had to sit in the tiny hallway outside their door. We tried to give him a general time when we’d need him, but you don’t know how long these things are going to take when you’re filming. What a great sport.” Helen and Max were surprised when Boulud entered their kitchen. On the stove was a pot of Helen’s homemade matzo ball soup, which was offered to Boulud to taste. He ladled her with compliments. Helen’s soup recipe is in this book, as well as Boulud’s matzo ball soup version with dill oil. It’s a warm-hearted scenario that is pure Rosenthal all around.

PART I — The Interview

Carefully pour the hot oil from the skillet into a saucepan or metal bowl (save the oil for the second pork chop). Finally, the nice people at PBS saw some clips I had made of some travel videos and liked them, and I got a meeting. Here's how I pitched the show: I said, "I'm exactly like Anthony Bourdain, if he was afraid of everything." Not really. No. There are too many great places. You can eat just as well. I mean, you can eat just as reasonably cheaply at a mom-and-pop place. My favorite thing in America is diners. I think we’re losing our diners, and it’s my dream to open one. I would love to open one in my neighborhood. Off the top of my head, I think République is amazing, I think for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I love Sonoratown. Rosenthal will donate his profits from this book to the organization I AM ALS. His mother died in 2019 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
