Description

Born in Kent, Imbert was educated at the Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone, spent his National Service in the Royal Air Force Police and worked for a short time with Kent County Council, before joining the Metropolitan Police in 1953 at Bow Street Police Station. Imbert was the chief negotiator over the six days of the Balcombe Street Siege, and when the situation ended peacefully with no lives lost and the four IRA members under arrest, Imbert was noted as a possible high-flyer in the police force. [2] Guildford Four case [ edit ] The Balcombe Street siege started nine days after the gang shot Ross McWhirter outside his home in Enfield, north London. Balcombe Street siege endsA six-day siege has ended peacefully in London after four IRA gunmen freed their two hostages and gave themselves up to police. They were also accused of conspiring to cause explosions throughout 1975, and falsely imprisoning the couple during the siege.

He was created a life peer on 10 February 1999, taking the title Baron Imbert, of New Romney in the county of Kent. [9] The Balcombe Street four came to trial at the Old Bailey on 24 January 1977. On 9 February 1977, the jury acquitted the defendants on twenty-six of the hundred indictments. On the remaining charges, the Balcombe Street Four were found guilty and each received a thirty-year minimum sentence. All were released on 14 April 1999 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. The streets formed part of the Portman Estate. Their layout shows a social hierarchy of square, thoroughfares and side streets mirrored by a hierarchy in the design of houses, from the grand four storey buildings in Dorset Square to the rather less grand terraces and smaller houses in Balcombe Street and Gloucester Place and the significantly smaller scale of the three and two storey ‘third rate’ houses in the side streets and mews.

The four were found guilty at their Old Bailey trial in 1977 of seven murders, conspiring to cause explosions, and falsely imprisoning John and Sheila Matthews during the siege. O’Connell, Butler and Duggan each received 12 life sentences, and Doherty received 11. Each of the men were later given a whole life tariff, the only IRA prisoners to receive this tariff. [2] [9] During the trial they instructed their lawyers to "draw attention to the fact that four totally innocent people were serving massive sentences" for a bombing in Woolwich and two in Guildford. [11] Despite telling the police that they were responsible, they were never charged with these offences and the Guildford Four and Maguire Seven remained in prison for 15 more years, until it was ruled that their convictions were unsafe. [11] [12] Release [ edit ] The four-man IRA active service unit, made up of Hugh Doherty, Joe O'Connell, Eddie Butler and Henry Duggan, carried out a 14-month bombing campaign across London that involved 40 explosions and left 35 people dead, including the Guinness Book of Records co-founder and rightwing political activist Ross McWhirter. Top kit to keep you fit In addition to Mr Purnell and Mr McVeigh, all the officers in the Granada and three of the SPG officers were decorated for their bravery under fire. The stand-off began when the men stormed the Matthews' flat as they fled from police after a shooting incident in Mayfair.Communication via a field telephone was established on a first-name basis between O’Connell and Detective Superintendent Peter Imbert, Scotland Yard’s chief negotiator. Twenty three years earlier, on the 22nd October 1975, which incidentally (or perhaps not) was the very same day as the Guildford Four were wrongly convicted of an IRA pub-bombing, a man telephoned the large four-storey Holland Park home of the Conservative MP Hugh Fraser and his wife, the writer Antonia. Their maid answered the phone and was asked what time the MP usually left home in the morning. She answered, innocently, that it was usually around nine. Later that night someone planted a bomb underneath one of the wheels of Fraser’s Jaguar XJ6 which always parked outside his house on Campden Hill Square.

The IRA's Balcombe Street gang, who are being freed from jail, have been serving life sentences after carrying out a two-year bombing and murder campaign in Britain. For Scotland, 2011 data is shown (update coming soon, the Scottish census was delayed by a year unlike the rest of the UK). Officers have now sealed off the corner of Dorset Square and Balcombe Street, in Marylebone, after a car chase through the West End during which shots were fired. A breakthrough in the stand-off at the couple's west London home at Marylebone came at 1355 GMT today when the gang's spokesman "Tom" shouted to police they wanted to negotiate.

Mrs Matthews is reported to have opened the door of flat number 22B to see what all the noise was about and the men smashed their way past her and barred the door.

This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building. They swamped the centre of the West End with plain-clothes detectives, with two on each street corner. More than 1,000 policemen were deployed in Operation Comb, the biggest undertaking of its kind London had seen. The Cortina was pursued through the busy West End traffic to Gloucester Place in Marylebone. A number of shots were fired and the windscreen of the getaway car was shattered. There are also details of military establishments, including the Army officer's training academy at Sandhurst in Surrey. The document also reveals that officers found a newspaper cutting listing the people who attended a memorial service for an ex-Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. Doherty, 48, a brother of Pat Doherty, a leading and influential figure within Sinn Fein, received 11 life sentences. The unit was, ironically, modelled on the British army unit, the SAS. The training they received produced a team which was so closely integrated that police experts at the time of the trial said they believed it unlikely that another such unit could ever be recruited.
