I listened to this one on audiobook and very much enjoyed the switch. Rupert Degas was an excellent narrator. This is one of those series that is good to squeeze in between other heavier works. I don't love the plots so much but the characters are quite fun. But since reading the first book, the book series has climbed to 11 with number 12 coming out it 2019. Be forewarned. Skullduggery Pleasant is a fantasy novel series written by bestselling Irish author Derek Landy. The books are themed on the adventures of a skeleton detective, named Skulduggery Pleasant and a teenage girl named Valkyrie Cain/Stephanie Edgley together with other friends.

Skulduggery explains that the only person able to create an illusion is Robert Crasis. They drive to Crasis' house, and he explains that Foe threatened his family so he was forced to disguise Mercy as Francine. Skulduggery asks for a map, and he finds the location of the Doomsday Machine. After Valkyrie acquires the brooch the next day, she and Skulduggery meet Mr. Bliss, who has agreed to help them get the Sceptre from the caves, at a Martello tower on the cliffs of Haggard. They show him the brooch, and he pushes Skulduggery off the cliff. Although Valkyrie had now been Darquesse for longer than ever, Skulduggery believes that she can still be saved. He goes to Valkyrie's reflection Stephanie for help, since she is in possession of The Sceptre of the Ancients. She accepts, on the terms that they are to kill Darquesse if they get the chance. After a hesitation, Skulduggery agrees. He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.After losing to Skulduggery Pleasant, Baron Vengeous goes after China Sorrows who was once part of a cult that worshipped the Faceless Ones and also included Serpine and Vengous himself. The Baron confronts China Sorrows in her apartment whilst Valkyrie is visiting. Valkyrie hides whilst China and Vengous talk. Vengeous reveals that he was released from prison by an assassin named Billy-Ray Sanguine who promptly arrives along with Dusk. A battle ensues during which Valkyrie reveals herself and defends China. Valkyrie Cain is soon chased by Billy-Ray Sanguine who can travel through earth and buildings. After a struggle, Valkyrie is saved by Tanith Low. In the process, Valkyrie steals Billy-Ray Sanguine's razor, his primary weapon, leaving the psychopathic assassin with a grudge against her. Skulduggery: Being a detective isn't all about torture and murder and monster. One vampire appears, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie begin to fight it. Oh I adore reading. I have always been an avid reader. My favourite book is "How To Make Your Own Fireplace", by C.H. Davenport. Wonderful book. Simply wonderful.

While his former appearance remains unknown, although he claims to not have been bad to look at, Skulduggery currently resides in the form of a skeleton. He can commonly be seen wearing suits made by his friend Ghastly, Skulduggery wears a hat, scarf, wig and glasses to cover up his face when in public, the wig being described as having fuzzy hair. Before the series, he got his skull stolen by some Goblins, while he was meditating. Since he has been using one he won in a poker game, however, he is reunited with it in Dark Days. It is noted that his old skull has higher cheekbones. Well, I’m an eighth or a quarter Irish or something, I believe, and even if that part of my family lives in England now that has to count for something right?😂) During the fight with Serpine in the Sanctuary, Stephanie glimpsed her True name in the Book of Names but could not remember it before the Book of Names was destroyed. Skulduggery destroyed Serpine with the Scepter, breaking the Scepter's power in the process. Afterward, Skulduggery offered to take Stephanie on as his assistant and apprentice because she is a descendant of the Ancients. Stephanie decided to take the name of Valkyrie Cain. In 2011 the author announced in a video blog that even though the first of Skulduggery Pleasant series, a second series of the Skulduggery series would commence with the publication of Resurrection in June 2017. A few months after Serpine was defeated, Skulduggery was captured by Scaramouch Van Dreg during his search for Rancid Fines and Christophe Nocturnal, who mistakenly believed Skulduggery was looking for him. After Scaramouch gloats for a while, he realises that Skulduggery is asleep. Scaramouch wakes him up and then reveals to Skulduggery that he has a plan for world domination. Skulduggery questions what Scaramouch would do after taking the world, pointing out all the problems that would come about, and then asks how Scaramouch is planning on doing this. Scaramouch reveals he has bought a box from someone which contains a bug which will sap away all the magic from every sorcerer and give them to him. Skulduggery then asks Scaramouch to release the bug to see if it's really in there. After Scaramouch does so, Skulduggery steps on the bug, killing it. Skulduggery then says that the world needs more villains who only want to take over the world rather than destroy it and arrests Scaramouch. I’m placing you under arrest for murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and, I don’t know, possibly littering.” Skulduggery is then seen following Tesseract. After Tesseract kills the Torment, Skulduggery tries to arrest him. During their fight, a man claiming to be Lord Vile appears and fatally injures Tesseract.
