Description

A pour of the 21 Year Old takes on a copper cast in the glass. The nose had a cake-like, fruity character, with a current of musty air washing over it. The flavor develops those qualities substantially, coming out as baked pears smothered in honey, touched up with vanilla, ginger and golden raisins. This fades fast on the finish, winding down first to hay before finally settling on a faint trace of oak. It’s a smooth, balanced, cultured dram, and well worth it at the price point offered (see below).

When pairing the Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old single malt scotch whisky with food, its distinct characteristics make it very versatile. The delicate sweetness in this whisky pairs particularly well with seafood dishes, adding another layer to each bite while also highlighting the natural flavours in the dish. However, due to its slightly floral and fruity aroma, it can also be enjoyed alongside meat dishes too – especially when combined with rich sauces such as truffle oil or béarnaise sauce. Illicit distilleries were commonplace throughout the Speyside area from 1700s but were largely made redundant with the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. [12] It was under this legislation that legal distilleries could be formed, subject to holding a license. Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, was allegedly instrumental in the passing of this legislation. Although there is no historical record of his involvement in the issue, his tenant, George Smith, who was operating an illicit distillery on his Upper Drummin farm at the time, became the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. [8] [13] [14] [15] The distillery boasts seven wash stills with a capacity of 15,000 litres each and an additional seven spirit stills capable of holding up to 10,000 litres. Following production, the spirits are left to age in oak casks for optimal flavour and character. Glenfiddich Production Process This makes Glenfiddich ideal for any special occasion – big or small! When paired with food, I find that this whisky has an incredibly versatile flavour profile; enhancing dishes such as seafood due to its delicate sweetness while adding another layer of taste when combined with rich sauces such as truffle oil or béarnaise sauce.

This new take saw its primary maturation in American and Sherry oak casks, before a round of finishing in first-fill Oloroso sherry, Troncais oak Cognac and Vintage Colheita port casks (this latter is a personal favorite when it comes to Port). This is bottled at 43% ABV. It’s been several years since I was fortunate enough to visit The Glenlivet Distillery, but I remember it well. It was May, but it being Scotland, it had snowed the night before. The great Alan Winchester, who stepped down as Master Distiller at The Glenlivet last year after nearly five decades in the Scotch business, was on hand to guide us through tasting several iterations of his single malt. So, I was already familiar with The Glenlivet 21 Year Old when Pernod-Ricard announced they were relaunching both it and the 25 Year Old malts. a b c d e f g h i Pacult, F. Paul (2005). Glenfiddich on the other hand was established by William Grant & Sons in Dufftown in 1886. It offers more intense flavours than Glenlivet. Its robust taste comes from its ageing process of 12-21 years which grants it an incredible depth of character that can be appreciated by whisky connoisseurs around the world.

When the original Drumin distillery burned down in 1858, most of its salvageable parts (along with the now-shuttered Cairngorn-Delnabo’s) were folded into this replacement distillery. It opened in 1859 and has remained in operation since (with one period of notable exception, touched on later.)The Glenlivet XXV (25yr) Single Malt: silver medal at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a score of 95 from the Beverage Testing Institute in 2010. [27] A term that has become synonymous with quality and great taste, Speyside single malts are scotch whiskies that are distilled in the Speyside region in Scotland. Although it is not a very big area, Speyside produces over 60% of the whiskies we drink throughout the world. a b Morrow, David (1 September 2022). Established in 1886, a new era of single malt began when the Glenfiddich ran its first batch of whisky from their stills on Christmas Day 1887. Nestled by the beautiful River Fiddich glen and surrounded by lush nature, Glenfiddich is one of Scotland’s most renowned distilleries with an illustrious history rooted deeply in tradition and spirit.I prefer Glenfiddich, in my opinion, the Glenfiddich 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky is better than The Glenlivet. Although both whiskies have a unique flavour profile that can be enjoyed on their own or with food, I find that the distinct characteristics of Glenfiddich make it more versatile and enjoyable overall. a b c d e Morrice, Philip (1983). Today, the distillery is owned by the Chivas Brothers subsidiary of the French alcoholic beverages company Pernod Ricard, which also oversees the distillery's production of 5,900,000 proof litres per annum. [3] [4] The majority of this – enough for 6 million bottles – is sold as The Glenlivet single malt, with the remainder being used in Pernod Ricard's blended whisky brands.
