Inside this set is a digital tuner, with the Freeview Play service built-in. As ever, it makes for a usable EPG and a decent set of catch-up services, however, the VIDAA U4 Smart TV operating system comes up short on apps. Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube are all present, but notable absentees include Now TV, BT Sport, Apple TV, Google Play Movies & TV and Disney+. HD is a step up in all regards. Colours are better defined and there’s more fine detail for a pleasing picture. There’s a bit of noise around faces, noticeably with wrinkles, and while it’s not the sharpest, it is a satisfactory looking image.

All forms of HDR are supported in HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Hisense says the panel can achieve a peak brightness of 1000 nits, but I’d imagine it’s less than that figure. Nevertheless, there’s a brightness and punchiness to 4K HDR sources that gives a good impression of what HDR can do. Moving to the Rec.709 HD colour gamut results and with the white point corrected we also have a near reference result with just two small errors seen on the graph. However, our DeltaE errors are an average of 1.73, so well below the visible threshold of three and we couldn’t see any issues with TV and film viewing. These are impressive SDR results from the Hisense. Advanced real-time AI scene optimisation and powerful picture processing delivers new levels of colour, contrast and detail for lifelike picture quality. The Staten Island Ferry scene shows that this Hisense has a good handle on colour. The blue sky, the yellow ferry and the red of Spider-man’s suit are all vibrant and well-matched. Looking to the clouds or the dark hull of the ferry, and it’s not too crude with HDR and contrast either.

Considering it's one of Hisense’s top-end TVs, there's no getting around the fact that the 55U7QFTUK is a disappointment.Buy It Direct Ltd is a limited company registered in England. The rest of the VIDAA U4 experience is basically fine, and if that sounds like damning with faint praise, then it probably is. It’s usable, responsive and pleasant looking but, as with many TV UIs, we aren't convinced that the content suggestions are all that helpful, particularly when they require subscriptions and rental fees to access them. We do, at least, like that the content is grouped by genre and that it’s made clear which service they’re on before you select them. The performance is decent and best suited for broadcast as it serves up clear dialogue quality. It’s also offers decent panning across the soundstage, as well as offering some specificity in terms of where sounds emanate from. The Rec.709 HD colour gamut results are very good indeed for an out of the box preset and DeltaE errors are well below the visible threshold of three. This level of accuracy for a mid-range TV is excellent with absolutely no issues visible within TV and film content. Colours appear natural with superb lifelike skin tones. Out of the box, the Hisense U7QF is impressive. Motion was decent on the U8QF with no noticeable induced judder with 24fps material when Ultra Smooth Motion was switched off and applying pulldown. We also noted some obvious motion trailing behind objects and other artefacts with some fast-moving material. When using the Ultra Smooth Motion settings you see soap opera effect from the interpolation straight away and, as you apply higher settings, image artefactssuch as false edges, trailing edges and image break up around fast-moving objects become much more noticeable. There are custom controls for Blur and Judder which you can experiment with for sports or other video content with fast movement, but for film and drama, we recommend switching it to off.

The Hisense U8QF comes with plenty of features but compared to an LG or Samsung it is more limited in scope. Despite its premium status, we’re still hovering around the value-added area here. The Hisense U8Q is its flagship 2020 television, featuring wide HDR support and an integrated speaker system from audio brand JBL. an impressive everyday workhorse with good image accuracy and a nice bright HDR image that many LCD peers at this price point simply can’t match On the Hisense 55U7QF, the best out of the box present was Cinema Night with gamma set to BT.1886 and all noise reduction and other image manipulation features switched off. The built-in speakers only amount to 20W (2x10W in stereo), which is to be expected at this price point. While the mid-range drivers are limited in their range of frequencies, they’re also entirely innocuous. You won’t much bass here, for one, but the sound is never harsh or grating, and holds up even at higher volumes. Unfortunately, there’s also a loss in terms of colour depth and accuracy. The crash scene on Xandar at the end of the film is a good place to spot this. The three way close-ups between the blue-faced Yondu, green-skinned Gamora and Peter Quill’s human complexion are off the mark. The balance between them is even but each feels slightly off the hue that they should be. Assembly of the TV is simple, requiring little more than slotting in the stand and tightening the screws. The stand juts out, and I can imagine would make placement of a soundbar awkward for smaller tables and stands. To wall-mount the set you’ll need a compatible VESA wall-mount. Problems still persist. The scene in Skyfall (Dolby Vision Bright) where Bond is served a martini at the Macau gambling palace features smearing, but at least it’s better controlled (just). Animation can suffer too, as an episode of The Simpsons eluded the Hisense’s grip.
