About this deal

Both require EQ for the treble. HD668B is more timbre accurate and natural after EQ than both SR and HD681, especially on acoustic instruments.

The AKG K240 MKII is a natural alternative to the Samson SR850. It features a similar design and is also an excellent choice for studio work. They do, however, similarly leak their sound as other semi-open headphones. So unless your room isn’t completely quiet, others can’t hear what you’re listening to. First off, Samson’s SR850 headphones cover the entire audible spectrum and more. Going from 10 to 30000 Hz, they go beyond what you can hear. Although it seems redundant, this enables a better distribution of frequencies in the audible spectrum. Additionally, you can also “feel” some of the bottom-ends, not just hear it. Try Equalizer APO with these settings : 20 -9; 25 2; 31.5 2; 40 3; 50 1.5; 63 1; 80 -1; 100 -2; 125 -2; 160 -3; 200 -2; 250 -2; 315 -3; 400 -4; 500 -4; 630 -4; 800 -3; 1000 -4; 1250 -4; 1600 -6; 2000 -8; 2500 -7; 3150 -5; 4000 -5; 5000 -9; 6300 -12; 8000 -10; 10000 -9; 12500 -7; 16000 -4; 20000 0 . Sweet. Great comparison of 2 headphones I have been really on the fence about. Just a few things: you keep mentioning that since the 668Bs have a better timbre, the 850s would be suited for more modern stuff. Well considering I listen to alot of electronic music (like daft punk, anamanaguchi, dorian, 100 gecs, Lorde), I really appreciate hearing the details separated. So would you still say I should go for the 850s?

Volume. The 850s are a bit louder overall than the 668B. Also, the 850s are drier and more analytical/edgy than the 668B. The mid-bass of the 668B is warmer, and the treble is a bit different. The 668B is more natural with a better Timbre. What is Timbre? I would say the 668B does better with genres in the vein of Jazz and Classical, while the 850 does better with more modern stuff. The 850 is very crisp to my ears and seems to do well with a variety of genres. It’s an extremely balanced and detailed can, with no added emphasis on any particular frequency outside of that treble spike which can be problematic. Overall, the Samson SR850 are great sounding headphones at this price range. The bass is present, but do not expect it to be punchy. The mids are generous and the treble response seems to be the only weak point. Overall, it is a sort of a bright headphone. The soundstage is pretty good, though it is a semi-open headphone, which is to be expected. Let’s delve into the details below. Low-End (Bass) Both are really good for gaming because of the immersive detail and positional sound. They both have a very spacious soundstage, especially for lower-end headphones. What is Soundstage?

Comparison Table

The frequency response isn’t the most even, but overall, they have a balanced sound signature with a bit of brightness. Bass has a good punch and control and works great for the majority of genres. These are made entirely from plastic. Housing, self-adjusting headband, and even earpads. They’re very lightweight for their size, which adds to the comfort, but not to durability.
