With intermittent employment, the family often had financial problems, worsened by Henry's heavy drinking. Albert, who was born in Yorkshire but resided in Southport, was an English hangman who executed between 435 and 600 people in a 25-year career. Despite Pierrepoint's expertise as an executioner and his experience with hanging the German war criminals at Hamelin, he was not selected as the hangman to carry out the sentences handed down at the Nuremberg trials; the job went to an American, Master Sergeant John C. Albert Pierrepoint ( / ˈ p ɪər p ɔɪ n t/; 30 March 1905– 10 July 1992) was an English hangman who executed between 435 and 600 people in a 25-year career that ended in 1956. Pierrepoint and his wife ran their pub until they retired to the seaside town of Southport in the 1960s. Horrific video shows subway carriage chanting 'F*** the Jews, long live Palestine, we are Nazis and proud'. According to a film about his life, it was one remarkably personal case that may have changed the mind of the hangman himself. Yet Albert Pierrepoint wasn't just any old publican running a Northern boozer - he was also the most prolific and famous hangman in British history. This from the man who proudly told me that he had done more jobs than any other executioner in English history. He died on July 10 1992, aged 87, in the nursing home where he had lived for the last four years of his life. In the months before he hanged Christie, Pierrepoint undertook another controversial execution, that of Derek Bentley, a 19-year-old man who had been an accomplice of Christopher Craig, a 16-year-old boy who shot and killed a policeman.

In 1956 Pierrepoint was involved in a dispute with a sheriff over payment, leading to his retirement from hanging. The shooting came after the officer had asked Craig for his gun, and Bentley had replied ‘let him have it’ - a phrase open to two different interpretations in the circumstances. Pierrepoint executed dozens upon dozens of other war criminals just as vicious (while also executing Britain’s own Acid Bath Killer in 1949).One of his final executions, in 1955, was that of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain.

Pierrepoint knew from an early age that he wanted to become a hangman, and was taken on as an assistant executioner in September 1932, aged 27. Among the names listed are William Joyce (Lord Haw Haw), Derek Bentley, and nine war criminals responsible for atrocities at Belsen, including Joseph Kramer, the Beast of Belsen. He quit working for a grocer to become licensee of the Help The Poor Struggler alehouse at 303 Manchester Road, Oldham. His family struggled financially because of his father's intermittent employment and heavy drinking. It was later discovered that Evans' neighbour John Christie had committed the crimes and Evans was posthumously pardoned in 1966.
